Heresy of the Free Spirit seeks to divine the improvisatory & unbound nature of Early Music in light of the late 13th century mystical tradition from which the release takes its title. Using the writings of Marguerite Porete & William Blake as genesis, this music searches out a veiled glimpse of poetry & mysticism through fleeting & free spirited improvisation. Exploring free form pieces & nonretrogradable patterns, rhythmic & melodic ostinati, new music composed in a minimalist style influenced by 16th & 17th century compositional practices & 20th century composers La Monte Young & Charlemagne Palestine, Heresy of the Free Spirit is an annihilation of otherness & a unification of polarizing elements.
Heresy of the Free Spirit is a collection of untempered minimalist expansions & improvisations for baroque lute. Creative process synthesizes 14th, 16th & 17th century compositional forms & practices with characteristics of 20th century minimalism. With a baroque lute in lutherie, these pieces have been rewritten for guitar avec cordes avallées by omitting the chanterelle & diapasons. Listen for ostinati, tetrachords & rhythmic modes, phases & drones, stasis & gradual transformation, eternal realizations & variations, ideas put through retrograde & nonretrogradable ideas. Here improvisation is composition unencumbered.
